UNIT 23: HONG KONG AND MACAO
Part 1: A Walking Tour of Hong Kong
  1. Since this is your first time in Hong Kong, I’d be happy to volunteer to act as your guide and take you around to see things.
  2. That’s awesome! I truly can’t thank you enough. I really can’t wait!
  3. So off we go! Hong Kong is composed of Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories, and more than 200 islands. Hong Kong’s total area is more than 1,100 square kilometers, which is 30 times that of Macao and twice that of Singapore. The population of Hong Kong is over 7 million, including more than 500,000 foreigners, among which Filipinos and Indians predominate.
  4. Could you briefly tell me about the history of Hong Kong?
  5. Of course I can. In the 19th century, after the First Opium War, the British occupied Hong Kong; at the time, there were just some small fishing villages here. Later, China and Britain signed the Treaty of Nanking and Hong Kong became a British colony. Not until 1997 did Hong Kong revert to China, becoming the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the PRC and implementing “One Country, Two Systems,” meaning that except for foreign affairs and national defense, Hong Kong may for 50 years enjoy a high degree of autonomy, without changing its capitalist economic system.
